If you can't change us, change me.

Re. the Julie Burchill/ Suzanne Moore transsexual debate raging on The Guardian & other UK websites: the reason identity/ gender politics has become such a minefield of online vituperation, contestation and sensitivity is that it's the one area of politics where individuals feel they can have some effect.

There's an overwhelming feeling that democracy no longer serves the people and that elites (bankers & billionaires, big media, corrupt unions and politicians, bureaucrats, corporations & other powerful interest groups) have found effective ways to remove its claws whenever it threatens their interests.

Sexual identity and personal politics remains an area where there is at least the appearance of the possibility of change. The same goes for the obsession with tattooing - if you can't change society, you can at least change your body. Discuss.
