THE pre-publicity contained the oft-repeated line that Miles Davis supposedly told pianist Wynton Kelly to "play like Ahmad Jamal" while recording the classic album Kind of Blue.
What it omits is that Kelly didn't. Not literally, anyway. Nor for that matter did Bill Evans, the other pianist on that revered disc.
Davis took what he wanted from listening to Jamal - a sense of space and understatement - but he also left important elements of his style to one side, as became obvious listening to the veteran jazz pianist on Monday...
